The predecessor institution of Wuzhou University, named Wuzhou Branch of Guangxi University, was established in 1985. In October 2003, the former Wuzhou Education College and the former Wuzhou Normal School were merged into the Wuzhou Branch of Guangxi University. In February 2006, with approval granted from the Ministry of Education, the former Guangxi University Wuzhou Branch was upgraded into a multidisciplinary public University, which is under the joint management of the Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the Municipal Government of Wuzhou City. Wuzhou University is located in Wuzhou City, which is known as “the thousand-year-old city”, “century-old commercial port”, and “the world's capital of artificial gems”. The establishment of Guangxi University in 1928 in Wuzhou made it the first university to be operated in Guangxi and it played an important role in the historical development of higher education in Guangxi.
The campus of Wuzhou University is located on the west side of the Guijiang River. Lying at the foot of a mountain and beside a river, the environment around the campus is a pleasant and a beautiful scenery, which in turn is conducive for learning and living. The campus covers an area of more than 113 hectares. There are three campuses, the North Campus, the Normal Campus, and the East Campus, with more than 270,000 square meters of land area in total.
There are 14 colleges and auxiliary units in Wuzhou University, recruiting students from 27 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities across the country. There are approximately 18,121 domestic students, 188 international students, and more than 1,100 staff studying and working in the university.
We have established a clear target in running the university. With Wuzhou facing Guangdong and Guangxi, interacting with the Southeast Asia, we actively serve the developmental strategies of the country and the region. The disciplines and majors of Wuzhou University are distinctive. The university currently has 51 undergraduate majors and 22 higher vocational majors, covering 10 disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, management and art. Electronic Information Engineering degree is recognized as a national first-class undergraduate-major construction program. International Economics and Trade, Software Engineering, Mechanical Design﹠ Manufacturing and their Automation, Product Design, and Pharmaceutical Engineering are the provincial first-class major. Information and Communication Engineering is one of the first-class disciplines (cultivation) in Guangxi. Signal and Information Processing, Industrial Economics, Software Engineering, Machinery and Automation are the key disciplines in Guangxi. Tourism Management is the key cultivated discipline in Guangxi. Electronic Information Engineering, International Economics and Trade are national specialties of colleges and universities. Tourism Management, Art Design, Software Engineering, Electronic Information Engineering, Forest Products and Chemical Engineering, Environmental Design, International Economics and Trade, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Mechanical Design﹠ Manufacturing and their Automation, and Product Design are the Provincial Feature Specialties. Gem-cutting Design Technology is recognized as a provincial-level First-class Undergraduate Course Taught in “Virtual Simulation Experimental System”. Software Engineering is recognized as a First-class Offline Undergraduate Course by Autonomous Region government.
Wuzhou University has achieved remarkable results in talent training. In recent years, we have accumulatively obtained 35 Autonomous Region Education and Teaching Reform Quality Projects, 107 Autonomous Region-level Education Reform Projects, and 11 Autonomous Region-level Teaching Achievements. We have constructed one national “Bilingual Teaching Demonstration Course”, one National Off-campus Practice Teaching Base, one Guangxi Innovative Talent Training Base, one Autonomous Region-level College Teaching Team, and 4 Autonomous Region-level Quality Courses. We are the first to create a National-level Makerspace in all Guangxi universities, a demonstration base for college students in Guangxi, and a pilot university for overall transformation in Guangxi. Relying on the Comprehensive Development Center for College Students, we have built a micro-enterprise incubator for college students, Wuzhou Cultural and Creative Industry Incubation Park, Maker Space, Microsoft IT Academy and other college students’ innovation and entrepreneurship platforms.
We have also obtained 241 National College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program projects, and 1 National College Student Off-campus Practice Education Base construction Project. Our students have won more than 90 national awards in competitions, such as China University Computer Design Competition, National University Student Mechanical Innovation Design Competition, National University Student Engineering Training Comprehensive Ability Competition, National Foreign Trade Employment Ability Competition, "Creating Youth" National College Student 10 Entrepreneurship Competition, China College Student "Internet +" Innovation Entrepreneurship Competition, College Students' art exhibitions and other discipline competitions.
The scientific research of Wuzhou University has achieved remarkable results in serving local areas. In recent years, we have produced more than 800 scientific research projects, including 27 at the national level and 114 at the provincial and ministerial level; 1 Special Project of Guangxi Innovation-driven Development (Science and Technology Major Project), with a funding of 13 million; 24 scientific research achievement awards at or above the provincial and ministerial level. In 2018, there were 82 newly authorized patents, including: 12 invention patents, 59 utility model patents, 11 design patents, 11 software copyrights.
At present, the university has been in the construction of the following projects: four Master's degree authorization stations, two provincial centers including an Engineering Technology Research Center and an Engineering Research Center, four provincial Key Laboratories of University, a provincial key research base for humanities and social sciences in universities, and a provincial key research and cultivation base for humanities and social sciences in universities. The university has been selected as one of the six batch of the Guangxi Postdoctoral Innovation and Practice Base.
To fulfill the local needs, the university has completed a large number of provincial and municipal major bidding projects, providing beneficial research results for the construction of the Pearl River -- Xijiang River Economic Belt and the development of local industries. The university has successfully studied and developed more than 20 application software and equipment, among which, the serial intelligent processing equipment for artificial gemstones, has reached the leading level in China. "The Shiplock Dispatching Management Information System for Changzhou Hydraulic Complex" has filled the blank of intelligent shiplock dispatching along Xijiang waterway. And "the system for 360-degree panoramic imaging processing" has been exported to European and American markets.
The faculty structure in Wuzhou University is reasonable. At present, there are 715 full-time teachers, among whom 88 earn their doctoral degrees and 239 are associate professors or professors. At present, there is an outstanding teaching team at the provincial level, and an outstanding teaching team for the cultivation of innovative talents in Guangxi. The university is proud of its outstanding faculty, including five supported by the “funding program for excellent talents in Guangxi colleges and universities”, three by the “funding program for 100 young-and-middle-aged backbone teachers in Guangxi colleges and universities”, and nine supported by the “training program for backbone teachers in Guangxi colleges and universities”. The university takes pride in its hardworking faculty, among whom one is funded by the "program for high-level innovation teams and outstanding scholars in Guangxi colleges and universities", and three are funded by the "studying-abroad program for excellent teachers in Guangxi colleges and universities". One teacher here is also funded by the "mid-term training program for high-level talents in short supply in Guangxi to America" and nine are supported by the "training program for backbone teachers in Guangxi colleges and universities". There are five teachers selected as training objects in the “training program for excellent young-and-middle-aged backbone teachers in Guangxi colleges and universities", four engaging in the "special project for talent training in the Western region", three engaging in the "top accounting talents training program in Guangxi”. The university also boasts of its two provincial-level excellent teachers, and one chief expert for the ideological and political theory course named Situation and Policy in Guangxi.
Wuzhou University is well-equipped. It, covering the total area of more than 270,000 square meters of student dormitories, has school buildings unique in mainly European style, built on the hill and properly laid out on the campus. The main teaching building -- Mingli building, the library, the gymnasium and the tennis center and A11 student dormitory are the distinctive landmarks.By the end of 2018, the total asset value of teaching and scientific research facilities and equipment has amounted to more than 156.92 million yuan, and the collection of books in the library has reached more than 1.6 million. Thanks to the operation of 70 severs, the university has set up ten information management systems, including the campus cyber security platform, the education management system and the official website that offers access to four online teaching platforms, websites on five subject, websites on 32 excellent course, and 31 websites linking to colleges and administration organizations.
Wuzhou university enjoys a good social reputation. In 2015, when Mr. Liu Yunshan, then member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, paid a visit to our university for investigation, he spoke highly of our Party building work among college students and our innovation and entrepreneurship education. The university has been repeatedly rated as the “outstanding unit in its graduate students’ employment and self-employment rate”, the “safe and civilized school” in Guangxi, the “pioneering unit which provides one-to-one technological support for the local economies” in Guangxi, and the “advanced group in offering students financial aids” in Guangxi. In addition, it has also won itself many state-level awards, such as the “advanced college and university in the socialized reform of logistics over the past decade” in China, and the second batch of “demonstration units of energy-saving public institutions” in China. It also earns many provincial-level titles, such as the “civilized unit” in Guangxi, the “advanced group jointly built by the army, police and people” in Guangxi, the “harmonious school” in Guangxi, the “excellent hygienic college or university” in Guangxi, and the “advanced hygienic unit” in Guangxi. The award list continues, including the “forest campus” in Guangxi, the “advanced college or university in fire safety publicity and education” in Guangxi, the first batch of the “demonstration college or university in ruling the school in accordance with law” in Guangxi and the “demonstration college or university in deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform” in Guangxi.
Since its establishment, Wuzhou University has made remarkable accomplishments and achieved leapfrog development. Looking ahead, it continues to adhere to the motto of pursuing "Virtue, Knowledge, Truth and Creativity" and carry forward the school spirit of being "Benevolent, Magnanimous, Dedicated, Meticulous”. Now it is taking the active initiative in serving the implementation of the major national strategies, including the construction of "the Belt and Road Initiative", Beibu Gulf Economic Zone, "Pearl River – Xijiang River Economic Belt", “Guangdong and Guangxi cooperation special experimental zone", and "Guangdong,-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area". To boost the local industrial development in the sectors of information engineering, machinery, chemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, jewelry product design and processing, logistics, tourism, finance, international trade, e-commerce, tea planting and processing, cyber information security, it strives to build itself into an application-oriented high-level university with distinctive characteristics.
