Wuzhou University started in 1985 as Guangxi University Wuzhou Branch. In October 2003 Guangxi University Wuzhou Branch merged Wuzhou Institute of Education and Wuzhou Normal College and became the new Guangxi University Wuzhou Branch. In February 2006,the then Guangxi University Wuzhou Branch was granted degreea-warding powers and became Wuzhou University, a general comprehensive university, which is under the management of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The University is located in the city of Wuzhou, which enjoys honorary titles of "an Ancient City of More Than 2000 Years of History","a Trading Port of More Than 100 Years of History" and “the world’s capital city of synthetic gems”. Wuzhou, where Guangxi University was built in 1928, is the birthland of higher education in Guangxi. .

The University covers an area of 853,000 square meters, while the floorage occupies 475,000 square meters. The campus is surrounded by mountains and rivers and is a pleasant place for study and living.

There are 14 colleges in the University enrolling students from 27 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities across the country. At present, there are 17,800 students, among whom 50 are international students, and 1,515 staff members, among whom 1,052 are full-time teachers. There are 291 doctors and 324 senior professionals.

Wuzhou University offers 49 undergraduate programs. Engineering, management science and economics are the leading subject areas of the University. Electronic information engineering is a national first-class undergraduate specialty construction program. International Economics and Trade, Software Engineering, Mechanical Design, Manufacture and Automation, Product Design, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Digital Media Techenology, Primary Education, Communication Engineering, Clothing and Fashion Design, Chinese Language and Literature, Business Administrationare the first-class undergraduate specialty construction programsof Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Electronic Information Engineering and International Economics and Trade are rated as national distinguished majors. Tourism Management, Art Design, Software Engineering, Electronic Information Engineering, Chemical and Forestry Engineering, Environmental Design, International Economics and Trade, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Mechanical Design, Manufacture and Automation and Product Design are rated as distinguished majors in Guangxi.
